Apple is set to introduce a significant alteration to its retail stores in the US through a new system dubbed “Presto in Apple” for iPhone updates.
As reported by 9to5Mac, this system will enable Apple Store employees to wirelessly update iPhone software even while the phone is still inside the retail box, utilizing a device resembling a spacer.
The new system allows iPhones to have their software updated right before opening the box
According to the latest Power On news from Bloomberg, reporter Mark Gurman disclosed that the new system will commence widespread deployment at Apple stores across the US in April, with coverage extending to all US stores by “early summer.” This process has undergone testing in select Apple stores since late 2023.
Gurman initially revealed details about this system in October 2023, noting its integration in the iOS 17.2 update. The technology revolves around a “pad-like device” that stores can place iPhone boxes atop. This system can automatically power on the phone, update the software, and then power it off again without the need to open the box.
Gurman mentioned that the system utilizes MagSafe and other wireless technologies to power the iPhone without unboxing it. Subsequently, it downloads and installs the new software before powering off the phone.
This transition implies that individuals purchasing a new iPhone from an Apple Store may no longer need to immediately update their device upon unboxing. Instead, the Apple Store will handle updates when a new iOS version is released.
Currently, iPhones are shipped from the factory with the iOS version available at the time of production. Consequently, many iPhones reach customers with older iOS versions installed.
